Salt was historically the great treasure of the Iîle de Ré. As a preservative it was indispensible for the agricultural and food industries and therefore for the whole economy.

After a long period of abandonment the saltmarshes are again active, following the rediscovery of sea salt by consumers the world over. Today 80 salt producers produce over 2500 tons every year.

The Eco-museum of the salt marshes at Loix proposes a guided discovery tour of the art of the salt producer and the saltmarshes of the island.
