The abbey of the Chateliers, considered the most important Cistercian abbey in the south-west of France has suffered terribly down the ages, first at the hands of the English, then during the religious wars. What remains of the structure dates from a partial reconstruction after the English burnt it down in 1625.
Many of the island's cycle-routes pass by this wonderful building.
